John's Island Work Project

July 28 through August 3, 2007

This year's trip is the 20th anniversary.

Johns Island, one of the sea islands, is located just South of Charleston, South Carolina. In this rural area there are many people living at the subsistence level.  For the past 10 years, a team comprised of members and friends of the congregation of Solon UMC has taken a week vacation time and made the long journey south to Johns Island.  Why would anyone leave their comfortable homes, and pleasant summer weather of North East Ohio, to endure the summer heat and humidity of coastal South Carolina.  The answer is simple, they have accepted God's call to help make the lives of those less fortunate than themselves a little more comfortable.

On Johns Island the team works on various home repair and
construction projects.

The work is coordinated by the Rural Missions ministry of the United Methodist Church.  The team camps out in a local church and works on any project that where their varied levels of skill and experience can be utilized.  The projects may involve repairing, replacing or finishing roofs, dry-walling & mudding, painting (inside and out), and replacing floors or ceilings.
Rural Missions sponsors a Sea Food Jamboree, which gives team members an opportunity to meet and get to know the ways and customs of the people living on the sea islands.
