Christian Thought Leaders Speaker Series

An ongoing dialogue to help Christians find our place in an increasingly secular society

Speaker: Rev. Dr. Bill McCartney – Dr. McCartney is a retired pastor, serving at Epworth-Euclid United Methodist Church, among others. He is a former Canton District Superintendent, long time delegate to General Conference and a professor at the Methodist Theological School in Ohio.

Topic: “Discipleship: Following the Footsteps of Christ”

This topic will discuss reflections on the Gospel of Christ and the legacy of John Wesley — and how we often resist that heritage in ways that diminish our own discipleship and also undermine the ultimate vitality of the Church.

Sunday, May 4, 2008 at 6:30 p.m.

Admission is free and attendance is open to the entire community

FAITH NIGHT EVERY TUESDAY

On Tuesday, January 8th Faith Night began here at SUMC.  During our first Faith Night semester (10weeks – Jan 8-March 11) we will offer two courses.  A Life Worth Living will be offered along with Alpha.  We will begin each night with a meal at 6:30 and then move to separate rooms for our classes.

                                                          ALPHA

Alpha is a ten-week opportunity to explore the validity and relevance of the Christian faith for our lives today.  It is a practical introduction to the basics of Christianity with loads of opportunity for debate and discussion.  The style of Alpha is informal, friendly and non-pressured.

Each week people meet together for a meal, a talk on topics such as:  "Who is Jesus?"  "Why Did Jesus Die?"  "How Can I be Sure of My Faith?" and "Does God Still Heal Today?"  This will be followed by small group interaction.  There is a day or weekend retreat midway through the course, which focuses on the person and work of the Holy Spirit.

WHO IS ALPHA FOR?

  • Those wanting to investigate Christianity.
  • New Christians.  (Alpha is a great place for us to invite friends who are not involved in a church.)
  • Those who feel that they have never really got going as a Christian.
  • Newcomers to the church.
  • Those who want to brush-up on the basics.
